Do you love the look of Birkenstocks but prefer to buy animal-free footwear? Birkenstock has got you covered! This German company now offers a variety of vegan sandals and clogs that are free from its traditional leather and suede.
You’ll still get the same look, quality, and comfort that you expect from Birkenstock, but you won’t have to worry about the harmful impact of leather production. Read on for a closer look at vegan Birks, including what they’re made of and my top picks for the best vegan styles.
What Are Vegan Birkenstocks?
If you’ve been looking for animal-free Birkenstocks, vegan Birkenstocks are the answer to your prayers. They’re made without any animal products.
Instead of leather or suede, vegan Birks are made with synthetic materials like Birko-Flor and Birkibuc. Birko-Flor is a durable material that’s designed to look and feel like leather.
Birkibuc, on the other hand, looks and feels like nubuck leather, or suede. With these vegan leather materials, you can get the look and durability of traditional Birkenstocks without using any real leather.
Some vegan Birkenstocks are also made with fabric, such as natural cotton canvas. Birkenstock’s vegan materials are easy to clean and maintain, making them a great choice for footwear.
My 8 Favorite Vegan Birkenstock Styles
Birkenstock offers vegan sandals and clogs for men, women, and kids in some of their most popular styles. Here are my favorites:
1. Arizona
Price: $110
The Arizona is Birkenstock’s classic two-strap sandal. It’s available in a range of colors, including white, black, and pecan, and also has a platform version. You can choose between faux leather (Birko-Flor) straps and textile straps.
2. Gizeh
Price: $99.95
The Gizeh is a thong sandal with a single strap across the toes. This version uses Birko-Flor rather than leather. There’s a flat version and a platform version, if you want more of a lift. Colors include black and pecan.
3. Mayari
Price: $99.95
A personal favorite, the Mayari is a strappy sandal that has a loop around the big toe. I was worried that the toe loop would be uncomfortable when I first bought mine, but this sandal was actually really comfy. This vegan version is made with Birko-Flor. Like the Gizeh, it comes in black and khaki.
4. Franca
Price: $99.95
The Franca is similar to the Mayari but without the strap that goes between your toes. It features more delicate straps than the Arizona but still fits securely around your feet. Pictured here is the black version, but it also comes in pecan.
5. Boston
Price: $120
If you’re looking for a clog rather than a sandal, check out the Boston. It’s made with Birkibuc, which resembles suede. Besides this black version, you can also get it in khaki.
6. Madrid Big Buckle
Price: $120
This cute, minimalist sandal features one big adjustable strap that’s made of natural cotton canvas. The vegan version currently comes in eggshell or faded khaki.
7. Medina
Price: $110
The Medina is a variation on the classic Gizeh sandal. It has two straps that merge into one and are adjustable to the size of your foot. The vegan version comes in desert dust thyme (pictured) and desert dust black.
8. Milano Kids
Price: $41.97 (normally $69.95)
Looking to get a pair of vegan Birkenstocks for your kids? The Milano Kids has a compact fit and strap that goes behind the ankle, so you don’t have to worry about your kids kicking them off when they’re on the swing set. These sandals currently come in faded khaki.

How to Clean Vegan Birkenstocks
To keep your vegan Birkenstocks looking great, it’s important to take good care of them. Here are some tips to help you care for your vegan Birkenstocks:
- Clean them regularly: Use a damp cloth to wipe down your vegan Birkenstocks after each use. For tougher stains, use a mild soap and water.
- Protect them from the elements: While Birkenstocks are designed to be worn outdoors, they can be damaged by water and extreme temperatures. If you’re planning to wear your vegan Birkenstocks in wet conditions, consider using a waterproof spray to protect them.
- Store them properly: When you’re not wearing your vegan Birkenstocks, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
