What Does EWG Verified Mean?

ewg verified list

The EWG VERIFIED™ mark mean the product meets EWG’s strictest standards for health and safety. It avoids any of the ingredients on EWG’s “Unacceptable List” (which are ingredients with health, eco-toxicity and/or contamination concerns), and the company provides full transparency with its ingredients.

What ingredients should be avoided in all natural diaper creams?

Due to health concerns, it’s advisable to avoid these ingredients in any baby products that make contact with their skin, such as diaper cream:

  • Parabens: These are preservatives that are often added to cosmetics and personal care products to extend their shelf life. However, they can be absorbed through the skin and have been linked to hormone disruption.
  • Synthetic fragrances: These can contain a mix of chemicals, some of which can be irritating to the skin or cause allergic reactions.
  • Phthalates: These are chemicals that are often added to plastics and can also be found in personal care products. They have been linked to hormone disruption and can be absorbed into the skin.
  • Petrolatum: also known as petroleum jelly, this is a by-product of petroleum refining. It has been linked to skin irritation.
  • Mineral oil: a by-product of petroleum refining that is often used as a moisturizer. However, it can clog pores and cause skin irritation.
  • Synthetic colors: these have been linked to skin irritation and even allergic reactions.

Best Organic Diaper Rash Creams and Balms

Here are our favorite EWG verified and certified organic diaper rash creams for babies.

Please keep in mind that every baby is different — and that includes which diaper rash cream works best for their skin. What works for one baby may not work as well for another, so you may need to try a few different kinds of diaper balms and creams until you find what works best for your little one.

1. Earth Mama Organic Diaper Balm

Earth Mama makes our favorite organic nipple cream for nursing, and they also make a darn good diaper balm that parents love. As a balm, Earth Mama’s is similar in consistency to vaseline, only it has organic ingredients instead of petroleum products.

This balm is certified organic and EWG verified as very safe for babies. It’s made with organic herbs and oils and can be put anywhere that needs a little moisturizing — not just baby’s tush! Although I’d personally want to be careful not to double dip…

Earth Mama Baby uses lavender oil, tea tree oil, St John’s wort, chickweed, plaintain, and calendula in their diaper balm to soothe and protect agitated baby rashes. Their recipe is petroleum- and preservative-free.

2. Motherlove Baby Diaper Balm

Unlike some other diaper balms, Motherlove’s certified organic recipe is free of zinc oxide and petroleum products. It’s compatible with both disposable and cloth diapers. Parents are in general huge fans of this diaper balm. It seems to work well for most babies to clear up rashes.

Motherlove is a women-owned company that uses EVOO, beeswax, Oregon grape root, myrrh gum, yarrow herb, and calendula flower in their recipe to create a restorable and breathable barrier that reduces irritation of the skin.

Motherlove’s diaper balm is non-GMO, cruelty free, and made in the USA in a solar-powered, zero-waste facility.

3. La Petite Creme Organic Diaper Balm

La Petite Creme recommends applying this balm after applying their diapering lotion. They are organic certified as well as EWG verified for safety. This balm is made in Florida by two mom-preneurs who know what’s up.

4. Made of Organic Diaper Rash Cream

The company’s non-GMO recipe includes sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax, cocoa seed butter, lavender oil, avocado oil, argan oil, and tocopheral. The only down side to this popular diaper rash cream is that it can be hard to get it out of the tube.

Best Non-toxic Natural Diaper Rash Cream Brands

These diaper creams have the highest level of EWG safety verification. Many of them contain several organic ingredients. They are deemed non-toxic and safe for your baby’s health, and they all do a fantastic job keeping diaper rashes at bay.

5. Babo Botanicals Diaper Cream

Babo makes one of our favorite non-toxic mineral sunscreens for kids, and they also make a highly effective diaper cream that’s good for stubborn rashes. Their natural diaper rash cream is fragrance-free, and the zinc oxide creates a moisture barrier that helps keep babies’ diaper area dry.

Their recipe also includes colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, and cocoa butter, which are soothing and nourishing for delicate skin. This diaper cream contains no harsh chemicals or synthetic ingredients, and it works very well at combatting angry diaper rashes.

Babo’s natural diaper rash cream works particularly well for kids with sensitive skin who are prone to diaper rashes.

6. Evereden Soothing Diaper Rash Cream

Everreden incorporates several organic and plant-derived ingredients (such as sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, and vitamin E) that moisturize and soothe babies’ sensitive skin.

Evereden’s natural diaper rash cream also uses zinc oxide, which protects infants’ skin and is highly effective at fighting diaper rash by repelling water to create a physical barrier for skin to heal.

This USA- made diaper cream is free of petroleum and mineral oil, opting for beeswax and shea butter instead. It’s on the thicker side, so it can be a little tough to get out of the tube.

7. EllaOla Protective Diaper Rash Cream

This diaper rash cream is easy to spread, goes on smoothly, and doesn’t have a strong smell.

8. Pipette Baby Cream to Powder

Pipette has solved the problem of how to use baby powder without the dangers of talc with this Cream to Powder cream. It goes on as a cream and then transforms into a velvety powder-like finish that minimizes chafing and irritation.

Pipette uses mango seed butter to hydrate babies’ skin and arrowroot powder and tapioca starch to wick away wetness that can cause chafing. It’s tested by pediatricians and dermatologists and is hypoallergenic, free of synthetic fragrances, vegan and cruelty-free.

A little goes a long way with this powder/cream!

This diaper rash cream goes on thick, lasts a long time, and is super effective at preventing and healing diaper rashes. Thinkbaby’s diaper cream has no parabens, phthalates, or harmful chemicals.
