When it comes to choosing wearable blankets, sleep sacks, and swaddles for your newborn, I recommend looking for organic sleep sacks rather than ones made from conventional cotton or synthetic materials. The best organic sleep sacks prioritize your child’s well-being and are better for the environment, thanks to more eco-friendly organic cotton farming and production practices.
Organic wearable blankets are made with natural fibers like cotton and wool that are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This means your baby’s delicate skin is not coming into contact with harmful chemicals. It also reduces the risk of your baby developing skin irritations or allergies.
In addition to keeping your little one safe, warm, and healthy, going organic helps support sustainable farming practices, which in turn conserve soil quality and foster biodiversity. By selecting an organic sleep sack, you’re making a choice to provide your little one with a safer and more comfortable sleep environment while supporting a healthier planet at the same time.
Materials To Look For In Organic Sleep Sacks and Swaddle Blankets
In terms of the ideal organic materials for baby sleep sacks, several options stand out as both comfortable for your baby and environmentally responsible.
Organic cotton is a popular choice, as it’s known for being soft and breathable for your newborn’s skin. When my daughter developed eczema a few days after she was born, her pediatrician recommended we only dress her in cotton pajamas and wearable blankets rather than using synthetic materials like polyester. Making the switch really helped her skin breathe so her eczema could clear up.
Note: It’s always a good idea to look for GOTS certification on any organic cotton product, as it ensures the cotton has been grown ethically, sustainably, and organically according to global standards. GOTS is considered the gold standard of organic cotton cultivation and manufacturing, so it can help you feel confident that you’re getting ethically and sustainably grown organic cotton in your baby’s sleep sack or swaddle blanket.
Another great material for organic baby sleep sacks is bamboo, which is often blended with organic cotton in baby clothes and wearable blankets. Bamboo offers natural moisture-wicking properties, so it keeps babies dry and comfortable throughout the night.
Organic merino wool can be another nice (and luxurious) choice as well, as it has exceptional thermal-regulating properties. It can keep your baby warm in cooler temperatures and cool in warmer temps, helping them stay comfortable throughout the night.
Even though it’s a great insulator, merino wool is also highly breathable. This means that sweat is efficiently wicked away from the skin, keeping baby dry and preventing overheating. And although many people think about itchy sweaters when they picture wool clothing, organic merino wool is actually incredibly soft and gentle on babies’ delicate skin. It feels a lot more like cotton than conventional wool (and this is coming from someone who is extremely sensitive to itchy fabrics!).
TOG Rating: What Is It, And Why Does It Matter?
TOG stands for “Thermal Overall Grade.” It’s a standardized unit of measurement that describes the warmth or thermal insulation provided by baby clothes, sleep sacks, and wearable blankets.
The TOG rating helps parents choose appropriate clothing and blankets to keep their babies comfortable and safe while they sleep, especially in rooms where temps may vary overnight or throughout the day.
The TOG rating system usually ranges from 0.5 TOG (which is very lightweight, suitable for warmer environments) to 3.0 TOG (which is heavyweight, so more suitable for colder conditions). The higher the TOG, the warmer the fabric will keep your baby.
Here’s the breakdown of what the different TOG ratings mean:
- 0.5 TOG: This is the lightest rating; it’s ideal for very warm weather (e.g., 75-77 degrees F) or for layering under a sleep sack. It’s often used during the summer months. Lightweight cotton and thinner muslin sleep sacks will often have a 0.5 TOG.
- 1.0 TOG: This is a light-to-medium weight, so it’s suitable for mild or slightly cooler temperatures (e.g., 72-75 degrees F). It’s often used in transitional seasons like the spring and fall here in New England.
- 1.5 TOG: Another light to medium weight, this level of insulation is often made from thicker cotton or cotton and merino wool blends. It’s suitable for temperatures from 68 to 72 degrees F.
- 2.0 TOG: This is a medium weight (e.g., fleece) and provides decent insulation for cooler temperatures. It’s commonly used during the winter months or in rooms with moderate climate control — for instance, rooms in the mid to high 60-degrees F.
- 3.0 TOG: This is the heaviest rating for insulation and offers maximum warmth. It’s suitable for colder environments, but may be too much if you keep your baby’s room more temperate.
When choosing baby clothing or sleep sacks with a specific TOG rating, consider the room temperature of the room your baby will be sleeping in. You’ll want to make sure that your baby is neither too hot nor too cold, as this can affect their comfort and potentially increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It’s good practice to monitor the room temperature and dress your baby accordingly, using the TOG rating as what it was meant to be: a guideline.
The ideal bedroom temperature for a sleeping baby is generally considered to be between 68°F to 72°F. It’s most important to dress your baby appropriately for the temperature in which they will be sleeping so they don’t become overheated or too cold.
11 Best Organic Baby Wearable Blankets and Sleep Sacks
Here are my favorite organic wearable blankets for babies that will keep them warm, comfortable, and (hopefully) asleep!
1. Touched By Nature Organic Baby Sleep Sack ($15)
Touched By Nature makes affordable sleep sacks and other baby clothing out of 100% organic cotton. Their sleep sacks are soft and cozy and come in the classic sleeveless design to keep babies from overheating as they sleep.
Touched By Nature’s organic sleep sacks come in sizes 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, and 18-24 months. You can find them in different pastels as well as some truly adorable prints (these foxes are sending me!).
The one downside to this brand is that the cotton they use isn’t GOTS certified, so you can’t be sure it’s of the highest quality in terms of the fabric’s production and manufacturing process (as you can with some of the other sleep sacks on this list).
2. Burt’s Bees Organic Sleep Sack (from $18) – Best Budget GOTS Certified Sleep Sack
- 100% GOTS certified organic cotton
- 0.5 TOG
Burt’s Bees makes some of my favorite affordable organic baby pajamas, and it also makes these adorable and super soft wearable blankets out of GOTS certified organic cotton. These organic sleep sacks feature a zippered closure which opens from the bottom up to make diaper changes that much faster and easier (trust me, this matters in the middle of the night!).
The breathable organic cotton of this sleep sack makes it perfect for sensitive baby skin and prevents overheating. It has a TOG of 0.5, so you can pair it with lightweight cotton pajamas to keep baby warm and comfortable, and it’s appropriate for warm weather sleeping. I loved using Burt’s Bees organic line with my babies when they were very little.
3. Owlivia Organic Sleep Sack ($19)- Cutest Prints
- 100% GOTS certified organic cotton
- 0.5 TOG
Owlivia is another great brand for organic wearable blankets, and I especially love their different cute prints, many of which are gender neutral. This sleep sack is made entirely out of GOTS certified organic cotton. It’s breathable, lightweight (at a 0.5 TOG, it’s ideal for warmer rooms), and it is made without any harsh chemicals or pesticides.
This organic sleep sack has a two-way zipper so it’s easy to put it on and off and to partly unzip it for easier diaper changes. It features a zipper guard so the zipper won’t come into direct contact with baby’s skin. This sleep sack is also machine washable (trust me, this matters!), and it stays soft after washing.
You can get this organic sleep sack in three different sizes: 3-12 months, 12-18 months, and 18-24 months. As with the other sleep sacks, Owlivia recommends you put this on your baby over their pajamas.
4. Keababies Organic Wearable Blanket ($19) – Best Zipper
- 100% GOTS certified organic cotton
- 0.5 TOG
KeaBabies is another great organic sleep sack brand. Developed by a child sleep consultant, this GOTS certified organic cotton blanket is slightly snug to encourage babies to self-soothe and ideally sleep longer (here’s hoping!). It’s also breathable and lightweight, with a TOG of 0.5, so it’s best for warmer months and bedrooms.
KeaBabies’ sleep sack has a zipper (and zipper guard) that runs around the entire sleep sack, from top to bottom. That makes putting it on and diapering a lot more convenient than the sleep sacks that only zip downwards. This sleep sack is super soft and makes me wish they made them for grown-ups.
5. Halo Organic Swaddle Blanket ($29) – Most Adjustable Swaddle Blanket/Sleep Sack
- 1.5 TOG
I used several different versions of Halo’s fantastic, high-quality sleeveless wearable blankets with my kids when they were babies, and I’m glad to see they now have an organic cotton version of their famous sleep sack. This sleep sack is easy to put on, and I LOVE that it comes with a swaddle option for younger babies who benefit from the comfort swaddling provides.
Halo’s organic cotton isn’t GOTS certified (hopefully they will get there someday), but it does now have a two-way zipper. This was a huge pain point for me several years ago when I was using Halo sleep sacks and had to take it entirely off for each diaper changes, so I am glad they’re making improvements on their design.
I also always liked that Halo has “back is best” sewn into each sleep sack it makes as a helpful reminder to always place our baby on their back while sleeping. This reduces the risk of SIDS and is super important, so I always appreciated the reminder.
Halo’s organic cotton swaddle/wearable blanket is a 1.5 TOG, so it’s good for slightly cooler rooms than the lighter ones on this list. You should still use it over your baby’s pajamas. Halo also wants you to stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of rolling over or breaking out of the swaddle wrap on her own.
6. HonestBaby Organic Wearable Blanket ($29) – Great Zipper For Diaper Changes
- 100% GOTS Certified Cotton
- 1.0 TOG
HonestBaby is a Los Angeles-based company that offers a range of organic and eco-friendly baby products, including non-toxic baby shampoos and lotions. Established in 2018, the company has quickly gained popularity among parents who prioritize sustainability and natural materials. You can get other versions of this sleep sack at Target, including in my favorite giraffe pattern.
This organic cotton knit wearable blanket is made with 100% GOTS certified cotton without the use of any synthetic pesticides, PVC, or phthalates in their dyes. Like most sleep sacks, it features fitted neck and armholes and a wider leg area to allow your baby’s legs to kick freely.
- GOTS Certified Cotton
- 1.0 TOG
I had several muslin baby blankets from Aden and Anais when my kids were babies. They always surprised me by how much I used them, to block sunny windows, to cover car seats while they were sleeping, and to let them play on when we went to parks and other places.
Aden and Anais also makes this lightweight organic cotton muslin sleep sack in five different sizes. The sleep sack is soft and exceptionally breathable, like their other muslin blankets. It unzips from the bottom for easy diaper changes and comes in really cute prints. Aden and Anais is GOTS certified, so you know each step of their textile supply change meets strict ecological and social standards.
9. Ecolino Organic Cotton Sleep Sack ($49) – Best for Travel
- GOTS Certified Organic Cotton
- 1.0 TOG
The Ecolino organic cotton sleep sack is actually made by the well-known company Woolino, which specializes in merino wool sleepwear and other products (see below for their merino wool four-season sleep sack). This wearable blanket, however, is made entirely from GOTS certified organic cotton that is sooo soft to the touch, as well as breathable for baby’s skin.
The TOG rating on this organic sleep sack is 1.0, so it’s ideal for temps between 69 and 76 degrees F. It’s also handily designed to be universally sized due to its adjustable underarm snaps, and it fits kids as young as two months up to two years old. Although it’s a tad pricier than some of the others, you really only need two or three of these to last the entire blanket-wearing time span of your little one’s babyhood.
This Ecolino sleep sack has a two-way zipper that can be opened up for easy diaper changes. It also has a closable seatbelt opening so you can more easily transfer your baby from stroller to car seat to crib without needing to remove their blanket. Finally, it has a fabulous warranty to back up this high-quality organic sleep sack.
10. CastleWare Baby Organic Sleeper Bag ($52) – Made In the USA!
- GOTS Certified Cotton
- 1.5 TOG
Castleware is a great sustainable baby clothing company that sources and produces its products right in the U.S. It makes sleeveless organic sleep sacks from GOTS certified organic cotton that feature reversible zippers for easier diaper changes.
The cotton version of this sleep sack is ideal for warmer temperatures, and can be used alone or over your baby’s PJs when it gets cooler out. It comes preshrunk and is not treated with any harsh chemicals.
Castleware also makes a fleece sleep sack with a 2.0 TOG, that, unlike many of the polyester fleece sleep sacks out there, is made of organic cotton instead! I love this, as cotton is much more breathable than polyester fleece and is great for cooler temperatures.
11. Woolino 4 Season Baby Sleep Sack ($79) – Best 4-Season Sleep Sack
- GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Outer Layer and Merino Wool Inner Layer
- Suitable for room temps 63-75F
Woolino is a company that makes beautiful sleep sacks out of organic cotton and merino wool that comes from Australian sheep. Its sleep sack is available in three sizes to get you through two years of blanket wearing. Merino wool is known for its temperature-regulating properties, and it’s also machine-washable, which makes it easy to keep this sleep sack clean.
Woolino’s sleep sack is a “four-season” sleep sack, which regulates babies’ body temps in warm and cool weather so they can sleep comfortably. It has a two-way zipper for easy access during diaper changes and zipper guards to protect baby’s skin. This sleep sack even comes with a nursery thermometer and dressing guide to help ensure you baby is dressed comfortably and safely based on the temperature in their room.
