What Are Natural Lipsticks? Exploring the Ingredients That Matter

Natural lipsticks are a healthier alternative to conventional lip products. They often use organic and plant-based ingredients and steer clear of synthetic additives and chemicals.

Here are some of the ingredients you might find in natural lipsticks:

  • Plant-based oils and waxes: Natural lipsticks often use coconut oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, and shea butter, which are seriously hydrating ingredients. They might also use beeswax or candelilla wax, which are natural alternatives to synthetic waxes and help the lipstick adhere smoothly to your lips.
  • Natural pigments: Instead of using artificial dyes, natural lipsticks usually get colors from plant sources like fruits, vegetables, and minerals. Beetroot extract, for instance, can create beautiful pink and red hues, while cocoa powder can create earthy tones. Mica, a mineral, is often used to add shimmer.
  • Botanical extracts: Calendula, chamomile, and green tea extracts are soothing, while antioxidants from pomegranate, grape seed, or vitamin E help protect your lips from environmental damage.
  • Essential oils: Instead of synthetic fragrances, organic lipsticks might use peppermint, lavender, or citrus oils to provide a pleasant and refreshing scent.

By embracing these natural and organic ingredients, natural lipsticks offer a gentler option for enhancing your lips without compromising your well-being. They provide vibrant colors and long-lasting wear while also prioritizing the health of your lips and the environment.

The Problem with Non-Natural Lipsticks

Non-natural lipsticks, while they might look glamorous, can come with their fair share of concerns. Some of these lip products contain potentially toxic ingredients that may not be so great for your skin or the environment.

These concerning ingredients include:

  • Synthetic colorants: These can include dyes from petroleum-based materials, as well as ones that have been identified as potential carcinogens.
  • Preservatives: Synthetic preservatives can extend the shelf life of the lipstick but have been linked to hormone disruption.
  • Heavy metals: Strangely enough, some lipsticks contain harmful heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury.
  • Artificial fragrances: These synthetic additives can contain phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, and irritate sensitive skin.

9 Best Natural Lipsticks to Elevate Your Lip Game

To help you stick to natural, nourishing lipstick ingredients and avoid the yucky stuff, we’ve collected and reviewed the best natural lipsticks with non-toxic and often organic ingredients.

Most of the natural lipsticks on this list are verified by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), meaning they meet rigorous standards for ingredient safety, labeling transparency, and manufacturing practices.

The ones that aren’t EWG verified received an EWG rating of 3 or under, which also indicates that the ingredients are generally safe and healthy.
