4 incredible benefits of bamboo

Here are some of the reasons I love bamboo.

It grows super fast

One of the best things about bamboo is how rapidly it grows. It can shoot up to three feet in a single day, which means it can be harvested in just a few years instead of the decades it takes for other wood species to mature.

Plus, bamboo doesn’t require as much water or pesticides as other crops, which makes it a far more sustainable and eco-friendly choice.

It absorbs carbon dioxide

And get this, bamboo is a natural carbon sink, meaning it absorbs more carbon dioxide than other plants, making it a superhero in the fight against climate change.  Bamboo also produces more oxygen than other trees, which is music to our ears here at The Eco Edit.

It’s naturally anti-bacterial

But that’s not all! Bamboo is also naturally anti-bacterial, making it ideal for products like toilet paper and personal hygiene items. You can get bamboo underwear, bras, and nursing pads.

And because it’s durable and resilient, bamboo can be used in furniture, flooring, and other household products, making it a more long-lasting and sustainable choice for your home.

It’s biodegradable

The best part is that bamboo is biodegradable, which means it breaks down naturally and doesn’t harm the environment.

So, whether you’re looking to switch to bamboo toilet paper, utensils, or even home decor, know that you’re making a positive impact on the environment while also adding a touch of natural beauty to your life.

It’s a win-win situation, and who doesn’t love that?

Our Favorite Bamboo Products for the Home

Here are a few of our favorite bamboo products we use in our home that help out in the fight for sustainability.

1. Toilet Paper

With a subscription service from No. 2, you can have toilet paper delivered right to your door on a regular basis, saving you time and hassle. Plus, you won’t have to worry about running out of toilet paper or making last-minute trips to the store.

No.2 also donates 50% of their profits to organizations that provide access to toilets and sanitation in developing countries. So, by getting a subscription, you can support a company that’s making a positive impact in the world.

No.2 bamboo toilet paper is really soft, gentle, and comfortable on the skin. It’s also strong and durable, meaning it won’t easily tear or break during use. They have a hilarious “no clump” guarantee. This can also help reduce the amount of toilet paper needed per use, and ultimately reduce waste.

And for the less environmentally impactful reasons, this toilet paper actually looks really good in your bathroom. You can choose from plain or decorated rolls that- and I never thought I’d say this about toilet paper- are really cute. I personally like the black and white print the best, but they offer different patterns to choose from.

Luckily for anyone who’s on a septic system, No. 2 has been deemed a septic safe TP.

2. Paper Towel

While we’re on paper products, we also love bamboo paper towel. It’s strong, absorbent, and soft- and because bamboo is so eco-friendly, we feel way less guilty using it on a daily basis to mop up our kids’ messes and faces than regular paper towel.

We get our bamboo paper towels from Reel, but there are several other subscription services out there to choose from.

3. Plates and Bowls

Weesprout bamboo plates and bowls are eco-friendly and durable bowls that are made from 100% natural bamboo fiber. These bowls are perfect for both kids and adults (we use them daily in our house). They are safe, non-toxic, and free from harmful chemicals.

The bowls are lightweight and hard to break, and they come in a variety of colors and designs that are both modern and stylish. They are also dishwasher safe and easy to clean, a huge plus in our house.

Check out our guide to other sustainable, non-toxic dinnerware sets for kids!

4. Totally Bamboo Cutting Boards

Totally Bamboo is a popular brand that produces high-quality bamboo cutting boards. Their boards are known for being durable, eco-friendly, and easy to clean. They offer a range of sizes and styles to choose from, including cutting boards with juice grooves and non-slip feet.

5. Food Storage

The Sweetzer & Orange Glass Container is a stylishly eco-friendly storage solution for your kitchen. The container is made from high-quality borosilicate glass, which is durable and resistant to shattering.

The bamboo top adds a touch of natural elegance and helps keep your food fresh, making it a great option for storing snacks, leftovers, and more. We store pasta in ours, and it looks beautiful on the counter next to our induction stovetop.

6. Toothbrushes

Toothbrushes like these from Greenzla are designed to be a more eco-friendly alternative to plastic toothbrushes, which can take hundreds of years to decompose in landfills.

These toothbrushes, which we buy for our kids, are made from 100% natural and biodegradable bamboo. They are designed to be gentle on teeth and gums, with soft bristles that are safe for sensitive teeth.

7. Nursing pads

Bamboobies nursing pads made from sustainably soft bamboo

For any nursing moms out there, trust me- you need Bamboobies in your life (and in your bra!). These eco-friendly nursing pads made from super soft renewable bamboo. Their nursing pads are soft, absorbent, and gentle on sensitive skin.

While these are some of our personal household favorite uses for bamboo, there are literally thousands of products that can add a little sustainability to your home while also looking fabulous.

Bamboo is a wonderfully eco-friendly material that you can buy with the knowledge that you’re supporting a sustainable material that’s good for the health of our planet.

Turns out the pandas were on to something this whole time…
