When shopping for organic baby clothes, it’s important to look for certain labels that indicate the product has been certified by reputable organizations. Look for these three labels in the companies you are shopping from to ensure you’re getting the best quality organic clothing possible:
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
The GOTS certification ensures that the entire production process, from the growing of the materials to the final product, meets strict environmental and social standards. Please note that “GOTS certified cotton” refers just to cotton fibers that have been certified organic. This means the cotton was grown without the use of toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, but it doesn’t refer to what kinds of processes or even chemicals are used during the actual production process of the clothing.
A full GOTS certificate, on the other hand, refers to a certification for an entire textile product, which means that all aspects of the product, including the fibers, dyes, and production processes, meet strict GOTS sustainability standards. In addition to meeting the organic criteria for fibers, a product with a full GOTS certificate must also meet social and environmental criteria related to processing, manufacturing, and labeling. Several of the brands we chose for our favorite organic baby clothes below are GOTS certified.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Another certification to look for is the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, a globally recognized certification system for textiles. It tests for harmful substances in every stage of textile production, from raw materials to finished products.
Textiles that meet the strict OEKO-TEX criteria are safe for human use and pose no harm to human health or the environment.
USDA Organic
Finally, the USDA organic label certifies that the product meets government standards for organic farming and production.
