I love a good tumbler. It allows me to bring a hot cup of coffee along when I’m walking the dog, watching my kids at the playground, or on the go running errands. It’s also a more eco-conscious choice than using single-use cups or plastic tumblers that can leach chemicals into drinks over time.
If you’re on a quest to reduce your environmental impact and avoid plastic, consider switching to a plastic-free tumbler. Plastic-free tumblers are made from more eco-friendly materials like stainless steel, glass, or bamboo. They’re reusable, durable, and avoid the health risks of chemicals in plastic (even BPA-free plastics can leach into our drinks).
Plastic-free tumblers are also great because they maintain the temperature of your beverages for longer, thanks to their thermal properties. Most can be used repeatedly for years, making them a cost-effective choice in the long run. Plus, a lot of them are dishwasher friendly, so cleaning them is a breeze.
When the time comes to discard tumblers, many are recyclable or more environmentally friendly than plastic. By using non-plastic tumblers and water bottles, you’re helping reduce the addition of more micro-plastics in our ecosystems.
9 Best Reusable Non-Toxic Tumblers
Here are our favorite reusable tumblers, many of which we own ourselves and rely on on a daily basis. Note that some of them avoid plastic altogether (with the use of components like silicone and metal straws), while others feature a plastic-free body and have a plastic (BPA-free) lid.
1. Yeti Tumblers (from $21) – Best For Different Size Options
Known for its rugged durability and exceptional insulation, Yeti tumblers are a top choice for outdoor enthusiasts and anyone needing a beverage container that can withstand rough handling. Their double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks hot or cold for hours, making them perfect for long hikes, road trips, or extended workdays.
I love that I can use my Yeti mug and larger “rambler” without a coaster, since the double wall vacuum layers mean they don’t sweat! Yeti offers several different sizes and styles, including those with slide-tops and cold-drink tumblers with BPA-free plastic straws. Unfortunately, they don’t offer a plastic-free straw option, but you could always buy a reusable straw separately to use with your Yeti tumbler.
2. Klean Kanteen (from $17) – Best Price
A pioneer in eco-friendly tumblers and water bottles, Klean Kanteen makes containers that are known for their sustainability and high-quality stainless steel construction. They also make some of our favorite stainless steel sippy cups for kids.
These tumblers are lightweight, easy to clean, and come in a variety of sizes (8, 16, and 20 ounces) and colors. You can use their regular cap or (and I love this!), you can instead use their straw lid cap that fits a stainless steel straw for a fully plastic-free drinking experience.
You have to buy the stainless steel straw separately ($6 for two), which is a little annoying, but still probably cheaper than some of the other plastic-free options out there.
3. S’well (from $24) – Best Style
Stylish and functional, S’well tumblers stand out for their sleek design and fashionable patterns. These tumblers are not only pretty to look at, they’re also very efficient at maintaining the temperature of hot and cold drinks.
You can get a S’well tumbler for smoothies and other cold drinks that comes with a stainless steel straw, which means your drink is never coming into contact with any plastic surface. Or you can opt for one of their hot drink tumblers, which comes with a BPA-free lid. These tumblers are fully compliant with California Prop 65’s regulations.
S’well’s tumblers keep hot drinks hot for four hours, and cold drinks cold for twelve. They come in 10 and 18 ounce sizes.
4. Hydro ($27)
Hydro Flask tumblers are celebrated for their superior insulation and robust build. Their TempShield technology ensures that drinks stay hot or cold for a long time. These tumblers’ stainless steel construction is both BPA-free and phthalate-free. I especially love that these tumblers are dishwasher safe!
Hydro Flask tumblers are perfect for adventurers who need a reliable container to keep their drinks at the right temperature in any environment. You can retrofit them with a straw lid and your own stainless steel straw if you’re looking for a fully plastic-free tumbler.
5. Ello Glass Tumbler ($12) – Best Glass
Ello tumblers are one of the only glass tumblers you can find that are known for their chic design and user-friendly features. They come equipped with a splash-resistant lid and a straw, so they’re convenient for using when you’re out and about. These glass tumblers have a silicone sleeve that protects the glass bottle from shattering, should you drop it.
This tumbler is 18 ounces, fits most cupholders, and comes with a bamboo lid that fits tightly into the glass rim. It’s ideal for drinking water, juices, and smoothies. Another bonus of the Ello glass tumbler is that the glass bottle is dishwasher safe (and you don’t need to remove the silicone sleeve). The straw this tumbler comes with is made out of a BPA-free plastic.
Ello makes stainless steel straw tumblers and vacuum insulated travel mugs for your hot drinks, too.
6. Takeya ($20)
Takeya tumblers stand out for their innovative design and functionality. They feature a leak-proof lid and an insulated body that keeps drinks cold or hot for hours. The double-wall design means these bottles won’t sweat or leave rings on your wood surfaces.
This tumbler fits most single-serve Keurigs and coffee machines, so it’s easy to fill and go in the morning with your favorite organic coffee. I like that it has a carry handle and is narrow enough to fit most car cup holders.
7. Contigo Tumbler With Stainless Steel Straw ($15)
Contigo tumblers are a great versatile choice for commuters or anyone who need a reliable tumbler for daily use for either hot or cold drinks. These are one of the few plastic-free tumblers you can find that come with a stainless steel straw that you don’t have to buy separately. This straw also has a silicone covering on the top for gentler drinking.
I’ve found Contigo to be one of the best tumblers for keeping drinks hot for a long time. This tumbler can drinks hot for up to eight hours, and cold for 24. When the slider lid is closed, it ensures that your drink won’t splash or leak out of the container.
You can use the included stainless straw for cold drinks or drink straight from the built-in slider for hot drinks.
8. Package Free Tumbler with Straw ($27)
Package Free embodies the ethos of minimalism and zero-waste, so it’s a good choice if your main priority is reducing your environmental footprint. These tumblers are designed with sustainability in mind, and they’re often made from recyclable materials. The straw is made out of stainless steel, with a silicone sleeve at the top.
They prioritize reducing environmental impact, both in the product itself and in its packaging, which is made from recycled materials. Package Free tumblers are a statement in support of a more sustainable lifestyle.
Package Free’s tumblers keep drinks hot for 6 hours and cold for 24 hours, which is impressive!
9. Stanley Vacuum Insulated Tumbler (from $20)
The Stanley tumbler basically has a cult following at this point, especially amongst the youth. It keeps drinks at the perfect temperature for hours. Stanley tumblers come in sizes ranging from a convenient 14oz to an impressive 64oz (prompting one to ask: who needs a tumbler that big?). The design is smart too, with most sizes fitting snugly in standard car cup holders for easy on-the-go access.
Warning: Recent reports have shown that Stanley cups may contain lead, specifically a lead-based solder that’s used to seal the cup and it shielded by a stainless-steel circular barrier. The company claims that lead won’t come in contact with your drinks unless the cup was severely damaged, but using an alternative may be a better option if you want to ensure maximum safety.
The rest of the cup is crafted from 90% recycled stainless steel, is dishwasher safe, and has a lifetime warranty. The Stanley tumblers feature a “FlowState” lid that has a rotating cover with three positions.
